Even though the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games has not been held yet
the 2024 Olympic Games (officially known as the Games of the XXXIII
Olympiad) has been announced and will be held in Paris, France from July
26th to August 11th 2024. Paris was announced as the host at the 126th
International Olympics Committee Session in Lima on 31st July 2017.
The buzz surrounding the Tokyo 2020 Games is reaching fever pitch and
Japan’s preparations are well under way. There has been a lot of
activity around the games, with the official logo being unveiled,
locations being confirmed for sporting events and building works under
way. The run up to the event is an interesting and exciting time for
Japan; however there is also a level of uncertainty with many challenges
There has been a lot of research carried out regarding the Tokyo 2020 Games as well as previous Olympic Games and the impact on the host countries economy and population. What could Paris 2024 learn from this and what Tokyo 2020 is currently facing?
You could use information gained from the research you carried out in
Semester 1 and apply theories and models you have covered in other
modules you have studied. As there is limited information about Paris
2024, you can make some reasonable assumptions. You need to state
clearly any assumptions you have made.
2. Group exercise
The French government has commissioned a major investigation to be
undertaken to research the possible problems that may be encountered
during the build-up to the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
Imagine your group are a consultancy team who would like to be chosen
to carry out this project. In order to bid for the work you need to do
some preliminary research into the potential problems and propose
innovative solutions in order to demonstrate your knowledge of the
situation. You need to design a poster and deliver a presentation, both
summarising your findings.
You will present to the tutors who will be playing the role of
important governmental officials. In addition to the problems identified
and possible solutions you are recommending you should also include
information as to why you are the best team to carry out the project.
Think about the subjects covered during semester two and the skills of
To undertake the task you need to:
1. Identify the potential problems in each of the following areas:
social impact, cultural impact, finance and investment, economic
impact, infrastructure, tourism, environmental impact.
2. Assess the importance of the problems you have identified and choose the two major problems.
3. Generate and evaluate potential solutions to the two problems
you have identified and select the most practical and commercially
viable solution to each problem.
4. Justify the solutions you have selected and explain how these will be implemented.
5. Identify the skills and strengths of your group members which
would be important if you were chosen to carry out the project.
6. Develop a poster to illustrate the problems and solutions.
Your poster should cover points 1 to 5 above and your presentation
should explain how you reached your conclusions and why your group has
the skills to undertake the project. Your group will present for a
maximum of 15 minutes to the tutors followed by a short question and
answer session. Everyone in the group needs to contribute to the
research and the production of the poster and must be prepared to answer
questions. Everyone must speak for part of the presentation but not
necessarily for the same amount of time, decide in your group how you
will divide up the presentation time.
Note – the poster will be the only visual aid during the
presentation. The poster should be A0 and portrait and it needs to stand
alone and be clear to someone looking at it without needing
Your poster and presentation will be assessed for evidence of the following:
· Idea generation and problem solving
· Analysis and evaluation
· Argument and logical thought
· Application of appropriate analytic tools and frameworks
· Written communication
· Presentation and oral communication
